Shirley Irene Steed Obituary

Shirley Irene McIlvain Steed was born on New Year’s Day, 1938, in Sebring, Ohio, and passed away 88 years later, surrounded by her husband James and the family who loved her. The daughter of Howard and Alberta (Wiggins) McIlvain, she was one of ten children and learned early how to care for those around her—a trait she carried throughout her life. She spent much of her career as a caregiver in healthcare, a role that fit her perfectly. Shirley was full of life, the kind of person whose laughter could be heard from the next room, and she gave that same energy and attention to everyone in her care. In retirement, she found joy in simple pleasures: hours spent on crossword puzzles, a lifelong love for Mickey Mouse, and a passion for the color red, especially in her bold, dangly jewelry. She enjoyed long drives, often ending at a casino, and shared her home with James and their two cats, Coco and Tut. Above all, she cherished people—her 57-year marriage to James was a lasting love story, and her family and friends were the heart of her world. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Jack, Donald, and Danny; sisters Clara Mae, Mary Grace, Ruth Ann, and Sharon Louise; and her children Robert Wilson, April Wilhite, Terri Virden, and Vada Wilson. She is survived by her husband James; her son Wesley (Jessica) Steed of Fresno, California; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her sisters Sandra Sadler of Alliance, Ohio, and Susan (Donald) Barker of Pahrump, Nevada. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. A private, family memorial service will be held in the near future.
