Constance Poranski Dieterich (Connie) passed away peacefully on May 19th, surrounded by family. Born on February 19, 1943, in East Orange, NJ, she was the only child of Alois and Frances (Nichols) Poranski. She grew up in Westfield, NJ, where her vibrant personality and remarkable presence were evident early on — even reaching 6’1” by the fifth grade.
Constance attended The College of Wooster, where she met the love of her life, Robert Reed Dieterich Jr.(1941-2010), in the early 1960s. The two were married on August 21, 1965, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in faith, music, family, and service.A passionate educator and musician, Constance earned her Master’s degrees in Music education from Boston College and Columbia University. She taught at the New England Conservatory and at Teachers College, Columbia University, before concluding her career at the Cleveland Music School Settlement. For 25 summers, she also taught “Fun With Music” in Lakeside, Ohio, sharing her joy and love of music with generations of children and families.Constance and Robert spent several meaningful years living in Sierra Leone before eventually settling in Youngstown, Ohio. Throughout her life, she carried a deep love for history, religion, music and family. As the wife of a Methodist pastor, she faithfully served as choir director for over 30 years at various Methodist churches, enriching countless worship services and communities through music.She was known as a doer — strong, determined, and always planning the next gathering or celebration. She was the family organizer, a devoted mother and grandmother, a worrier at heart, and someone who brought fun, warmth, and steadfast love to those around her.Constance is survived by her children, Kate Dieterich Holt and her husband Tim, and their children Rory and Silas; and David L. Dieterich and his wife HaJeong, and their children Robert and Jonathan.She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.A celebration of life for Connie will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends when arrangements are finalized.
